Non-native Species

Here are just some of the non-native species we are not able to care for.

These are starlings.  They are an invasive species imported from Europe.  They take over the nesting sites of many native birds.

This is a city pigeon or rock dove.  They were originally imported from Europe and have invade all urban areas.  If you find an injured pigeon or dove in town it is probably a rock dove.  If you find one rurally it may be a band tailed pigeon or a mourning dove.

These are female and male house sparrows.  Also imports from Europe they arrived in Brooklyn in 1851 and had spread to the Rocky Mountains within 50 years.

This turtle is a red-eared slider.  It is the most popular pet turtle in the United States but is native only in the South.  It is found throughout the US and the world because of pet releases.  We do have a native turtle in Humboldt County, the western pond turtle.
